The E-8 Seasonal Worker Visa is designated for short-term work in Korea’s agricultural and fishing industries and has four subtypes depending on the recruitment process.
Types of E-8 Visa and Eligibility
- E-8-1 (Agriculture): Selected through an MOU between a Korean local government and a foreign local government.
- E-8-2 (Agriculture): Foreign relatives within the fourth degree of kinship (e.g., cousins) of F-6 visa holders (spouses of Koreans) are eligible for recommendation.
- E-8-3 (Fishing): Also based on an MOU between Korean and foreign local governments.
- E-8-4 (Fishing): Relatives of F-6 visa holders within the fourth degree of kinship can be recommended for seasonal work in fishing.
Application Process for E-8-1 / E-8-3 Visa
- A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is established between Korean and foreign local governments for seasonal labor.
- The foreign government selects residents to recommend to the Korean government.
- The Korean local government assigns seasonal workers to specific farms or fisheries and begins the visa invitation process.
- Seasonal workers enter Korea and work in agriculture or fishing for 5 to 8 months.
Employer Requirements
- Minimum Wage: Employers must comply with Korea’s minimum wage laws.
- Facilities: Employers must provide adequate lodging and shower facilities, which must pass inspection by the local government.
- Insurance: Employers are required to enroll seasonal workers in industrial accident insurance.
- Days Off: Workers must have at least 2 days off per month.
